What does it take to start a business in middle school? Clark-Pleasant Middle School students got the inside scoop today from someone who knows exactly what that looks like.
As part of College & Career Week, Ms. Shannon Proctor’s 7th grade computer science class welcomed Whiteland Community High School senior, Troy Merchant, co-owner of Merchant Brothers Cotton Candy (which also serves Hershey’s Ice Cream.)
Troy and his brother started their business back in 2021—when he was in 8th grade and his brother was in 6th—after buying an industrial cotton candy machine at an auction for just $200 (worth about $2,000!). Since then, they’ve grown their business, created a logo, built a model, solved real-world problems, and learned the ins and outs of being young entrepreneurs.
Today, Troy shared that journey with our students—answering questions, sharing stories, and even selling cotton candy and ice cream right in the classroom.
This week, students also heard from other local entrepreneurs:

✨ Tracy Bohler – Owner of Farm Girl Mercantile
✨ Tim Rinehold – Principal at CPMS & Owner of Rinehold Honey
And next week, the learning continues with food truck vendors!
Through this unit, students aren’t just hearing stories—they’re living them. They’re challenged to create their own mobile businesses: designing logos, writing business plans, budgeting, building websites, and more.
A huge congratulations to Mrs. Proctor for designing such a creative, hands-on way to bring real-world learning into the classroom. Her dedication is giving students the chance to connect with local entrepreneurs, think critically, and imagine what’s possible for their own futures.
Congratulations to Patty Evans, our incredible Clark-Pleasant Middle School science teacher, on being awarded a STEM Grant through the Community Career + Education Forum (CCEF), sponsored by Endress+Hauser!
A veteran of 36 years in the classroom, Mrs. Evans received $1,575 for her project “Light Explorers – Engineering and Design in Action.” With nearly 170 students each day, she is giving every student the opportunity to explore hands-on learning with mirrors, lenses, and prisms to manipulate and bend light in creative ways.
Through this project, students will apply the Engineering Design Process to brainstorm, test, and refine experiments—connecting physical science concepts to real-world applications like optics, cameras, and telescopes. By the end, they’ll demonstrate their understanding of reflection, refraction, and light properties while sharing their findings through engaging presentations.

Multi-Lingual Common Communities in CPCSC
We warmly invite our Punjabi- and Spanish-speaking families to join us for Common Communities, a welcoming time to connect with other families and school staff. Dr. Edsell will share updates on high school construction as well as information about attendance and cultural or religious observances. Our Tech Team will show families how to use Skyward to check grades and how to choose their preferred language in ParentSquare. If time allows, families will also have a chance to share their experiences from the beginning of the year, ask questions, and let us know what’s important to them. We look forward to seeing you there!

Come out and support the CPMS National Junior Honor Society at their annual car wash tomorrow, Saturday, August 23rd! From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., they'll be hard at work at Donatos Pizza in Greenwood (2260 US 31 S, Greenwood, IN).
All donations collected go directly to funding the various service projects the students will complete throughout the school year. Your support helps them make a difference in the community!

Today, we welcomed our incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th grade families for Registration Day, and the building was full of energy and excitement for the year ahead!
Families picked up schedules, took (and ordered) school pictures, met with our school nurse, transportation, food services, and athletics teams, toured the school, opened lockers (some even decorated them!), picked up Chromebooks and chargers, deposited lunch money, grabbed spirit wear—and so much more!
Registration day is a mandatory event and is open until 6:00 p.m. today (Wednesday, July 23rd)
Thank you to all who came out to get ready for an amazing 2024-25 school year. We can’t wait to welcome you back soon! 💙
