Mental Health Month 2023 Having safe, stable, and healthy home conditions set the foundation for achieving and maintaining good mental health. For many people, not having a true “home base” to consistently return to can leave them feeling distressed, disconnected, or isolated. Wherever you call “home,” it should give you feelings of comfort, support, and calmness. If not, there are things you can do to your space to help you be more productive, reach your goals, and improve your mental health. #Lookaround #Lookwithin #MentalHealthMonth

They Put Smiles on Students' Faces! It’s SCHOOL LUNCH HERO DAY, a time to celebrate our Clark-Pleasant Food Services workers who put smiles on student faces Monday through Friday. You might have noticed some extra balloons and “hero” t-shirts in some of our lunchrooms today. We would like to thank our food service staff for their dedication to feeding our students a healthy lunch each school day. "We have about 70 employees who are hard-working and who really care about the students", says Food Services Director, Kim Combs. "We want meals to be healthy and delicious and eaten in an enjoyable atmosphere each and every day". School Lunch Hero Day is held annually on the first Friday in May in honor of each person responsible for providing lunches (and food) to millions of school children across America.

May the 4th Be With You! From a Social Studies Galaxy far, far away at CPMS Mr. Beck could be overheard telling his students; "You know, sometimes I amaze even myself." Mr. Phipps had this quick remark; don’t everybody thank me at once." Mr. Parkhurst, on the other hand, had some great advice for his students; “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Mr. Akers reassured his students; "I won’t fail you. I’m not afraid” and Mrs. Lyons summed up the day with this comment; “I’d just as soon kiss a Wookiee.”

Cash Prize Presented to GCES Teacher Angela Fowler! At Red Carpet Gala, Lowell and Mike Milken Present Indiana 2022 Milken Educator Award Recipient with $25,000 Cash Prize Santa Monica, Calif., (May 2, 2023) — The Milken Family Foundation says: Roll out the red carpet for America’s outstanding educators! Lowell Milken – founder of the Milken Educator Awards and chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation – and Mike Milken – co-founder and president of the Milken Family Foundation – presented Indiana 2022 Milken Educator Award recipient Angela Fowler with her $25,000 cash prize at a national forum held at UCLA April 20-21. The gala celebration culminated a powerful professional development experience for Milken Educators to “Celebrate, Elevate and Activate” K-12 teaching. “From the original cadre of 12 outstanding educators in California, the Milken Educator Network has grown to a nationwide force of more than 2,900 educators. Tonight, that network expands still further, with the induction of 35 professionals whose talent and dedication are helping to ensure a brighter future for thousands of young Americans – indeed, for our very nation itself,” stated Lowell Milken. “We shine a spotlight on these men and women so that when they return to their schools, they will know that their work is not only noticed but treasured. We hope that they will inspire many other talented young people to become exceptional teachers, principals and specialists, keeping the fire of learning alive in the hearts and minds of young people for decades to come.”

Helping Hands! A class of third grade students from nearby Franklin Community Schools are reaching out to Whiteland students who were impacted by the recent tornado, thanks to the long-time professional relationship of their two teachers. Brandi Speight, from Pleasant Crossing Elementary, has known Needham Elementary teacher Rebecca McCain for more than 20 years. This friendship has led to a story of compassion as the Needham third graders wanted to do something to help Whiteland students. “Mrs. McCain has always had a heart of gold”, says Mrs. Speight. “She contacted me right after the tornado wanting some practical way to help the kids who were affected by this tragedy”. Mrs. Speight had the opportunity to visit McCain’s class of third graders at Needham, last week. She says McCain’s caring spirit has definitely rubbed off onto her students. After lots of hugs Mrs. Speight came back to Whiteland Elementary with dozens of cards, games and books donated by the students to our Whiteland students who have lost a lot due to the tornado. “The thought behind their donations was that these things could take their mind off of the temporary housing they might still be in and the rebuilding they are doing and that they may get some joy in getting "lost" in a story or game with their family”. Mrs. Speight says if there was a way to “bottle up” the love from the Needham students and pass it on to each Whiteland student she would make it happen. “I think we all know that academic lessons students can learn from us are necessary and important. That is our goal as educators! But the life lessons that our students can learn in addition to that such as compassion and caring for others are the priceless lessons that they'll need to be the kind of humans we all want to see them become to make this world a better place”, concluded Mrs. Speight.
