Young Entrepreneurs! WCHS economics students are testing out the business world this week during their annual Econ Mall event. As part of their class students come up with a business idea, marketing strategy and a price for their product or service. The big test is trying to sell those goods and services to other students. Many stuck with selling familiar products like pop and pizza while others decided to really test the market by selling things like bamboo plants and homemade t-shirts. Students learn a lot through the exercise such as learning what it takes to make a profit or break even. Others unfortunately learn what a business "loss" can look like.

Savoring Success! Thursday, we celebrated, with a luncheon, 55 seniors who are on track to earn the Indiana College Core (ICC). We are very proud of their accomplishments! ICC is a "block" of 30 general education credits of college-level coursework. They earn these credits through WCHS dual credit classes and qualifying AP scores. The ICC is guaranteed to transfer between Indiana public colleges and universities. To earn the ICC, students must take at least three credit hours in six competency areas, as well as an additional 12 “elective” credit hours from the same competencies. Once students earn these credits, they will have fulfilled the core requirements equivalent to their first year of college starting college as Sophomores, saving time and money! Student Consultants! In the wake of the recent Tornado that tore a destructive path through the Town of Whiteland, a class of WCHS students have signed on to become consultants, so to speak, as the Town looks for ways to improve its public safety plan. Government teacher, Justin Schwenk, is leading his students through this real-life assignment to look for solutions and policies that could actually help improve how the town responds to disasters in the future. “Students will research, gather data, identify policy solutions, create an action plan and ultimately present their recommendations to Whiteland and Johnson County safety officials”, says Mr. Schwenk. Students are working in teams of four with each concentrating on specific areas. Local government officials including Carmen Young, from the Town of Whiteland, spoke to the students this week about areas where they can provide input. While it might be relatively easy to define problems, coming up with solutions and how to implement them as well as gaining public input will be more challenging for these government students during their last month of school. The project is to be completed by May 25th. They must do an oral presentation supplemented by a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation. All materials that will be provided to Town and County officials.
